What is attachment-based therapy?

Many people come to therapy because something feels difficult or unsettled, even if they can’t easily explain why.

You might notice familiar patterns in relationships, a strong inner critic, or a tendency to feel anxious, overwhelmed or shut down under pressure. Attachment-based therapy offers a way of understanding these experiences with curiosity rather than judgement.

Rather than focusing on what’s “wrong”, attachment-based therapy looks at how patterns of coping and relating developed, often early in life, and how they continue to shape how you feel, think and respond today. These patterns usually formed for good reasons, at a time when they helped you manage, belong or stay safe.

This guide offers a clear, accessible introduction to attachment-based therapy, what it involves, and how it can support change without rushing or forcing it.
