Working with Attachment in the Therapy Room: A Workshop for Therapists

Many of us learn about attachment theory during our core training. We learn about attachment styles, and we can often describe attachment concepts well enough to write an essay, discuss it in supervision, or explain it to a client.

But something that I've noticed - having undertaken further training in attachment - is that many therapists still find themselves wondering how to actually recognise attachment in the room. How to think about safety, security, co-regulation, and what happens when our 'attachment alarm' system goes off.

And how to actually work with it. How to understand and make sense of the patterns that we are seeing. What happens when we pay attention to our own internal responses. And how all of these plays out in the therapy room, and in the supervision room too.

This way of thinking sits at the heart of my workshop, Working with Attachment in the Therapy Room.

It's an in-person workshop, taking place on Saturday 17th October 2026, from 9.30am to 1.30pm, in Radlett, Hertfordshire, WD7.

Designed for both qualified therapists and trainee therapists seeing clients on placement, the workshop will explore how attachment patterns develop, how attachment defences operate, how behaviour can be understood as protection, and how attachment shows up within therapeutic relationships.

We won't be labelling clients or putting them into boxes. We'll be thinking about how to notice attachment more clearly, think about it more relationally, and feel more confident responding to what is unfolding in the room.

The workshop combines theory, discussion, reflection and practical application in a way that is grounded in real therapeutic work.
