Here’s what I love about online therapy

My first experiences of counselling – both as a client and as a counsellor – were face-to-face in a therapy room. And when I started training, that's exactly what I imagined therapy would always look like. In fact, I remember seeing someone advertising online therapy and thinking it sounded like a strange concept.
But then the world changed. Like many counsellors, I shifted to working online, simply because it was what we all needed to do. But over time, something totally unexpected happened. I realised just how powerful online therapy could be. And it's now my first choice – both as a counsellor and as a client. I work entirely online with clients across the UK. Here’s what I love about it.
You don’t have to travel to therapy
There’s no commute, no worries about parking, no sitting in traffic. Just your own quiet space and a good internet connection. This isn't just a 'nice to have'. For many of the women I work with, time is already stretched thin. We’re balancing work, family, caring responsibilities, and trying to have some time to ourselves too. So the idea of fitting a therapy session into your week might feel impossible. Online sessions remove that extra barrier.
You can choose where you feel most comfortable
Don’t get me wrong – some therapy rooms are the cosiest, most comfortable sanctuaries you’ll ever see. But what I’ve always loved about online therapy is that you get to create the setting where you feel most comfortable, settled, and private. Bring your blanket, your favourite hot drink, curl up on your comfiest sofa. This level of comfort isn't just nice – it's therapeutic. It helps you feel more grounded and relaxed when we’re working together.
It’s more accessible than you might think
There are lots of things that might make it difficult to start therapy. Accessibility really shouldn't be one of them. If you live in a rural area, have limited mobility, or feel anxious about leaving the house, online therapy is a highly accessible option. It means that your lifestyle or circumstances won’t get in the way of getting the help you need.
You have much more choice available
Working online means you're not limited to therapists nearby. You can find someone who really feels like the right fit, even if they’re based miles away. This is important for so many reasons. You might be worried about working with a local therapist in case you end up bumping into each other. You might want to seek out someone from your own community or background – or alternatively, someone who’s entirely separate from it. You might want to find someone with specialist training or availability at very specific times.
It's flexible and easy to fit around your life
Life can be unpredictable. I’ve found that an online therapy session is much easier to fit around your schedule than one that takes place in a fixed location.
And yes – online therapy still feels real and connected
One of the biggest myths about online therapy is that it feels distant or impersonal. But I can honestly say that I’ve found the opposite to be true. Therapy is about the relationship between us – not the room we’re sitting in. In our online space, there’s just as much room for talking, thinking, and feeling. We can notice the silences and hold space for the things that might be difficult to say.
If you’ve been wondering whether online therapy might work for you, I hope this offers some reassurance.
And if you’re ready to explore how therapy could help you, you’re very welcome to get in touch. We can start with a free, no-pressure chat. Sometimes, the first step is just saying hello.
